Four-wheel drive is helpful for driving in adverse conditions such as the snow, but don’t let it lull you into a false sense of security. When driving in the snow, you still have to take care to optimize your vehicle so the four-wheel drive can perform at its best. Here are some tips for doing so.
Use Matching Tires
This applies to driving in any situation, not just snow. Don’t’ drive on tires of different circumference as it can damage the driveline of the truck and create handling problems.
The slower you go, the better, especially when there’s a lot of snow on the road. Going into a curve or turn with too much speed can cause you to spin out.
Try Two-Wheel Drive Downhill
If you’re going down a hill in low gear, shift to two-wheel drive. This will prevent the front wheels from sliding and loss of control of the truck.
Uphill, Turn Off Traction Control
Turn off traction control systems so they don’t stop the truck if the tires start spinning when you’re trying to make it up a snowy hill. Try to get a little more momentum before going up a hill, but not so much that you lose control.
The more experience you have driving in the snow, the better you’ll be. Practice in an empty snow-covered parking lot if possible. Remember that while four-wheel drive can help you get going in the snow, it won’t help you stop.
