Are You Getting a Used Car?

Are You Getting a Used Car?

Although you want to make your current ride one that everyone will be jealous of, or if you’re starting the customization game, it might make more sense to get a used car.

As the calendar year winds down, car dealerships are going to start offering some sweetheart deals. Although you want to make your current ride one that everyone will be jealous of, or if you’re starting the customization game, it might make more sense to get a used car. That way, restoring it to its former glory or putting on new bells and whistles won’t leave you without a dependable way to get where you need to go.

What You Need

You will need a few things to help ensure you get the best deal on a used car possible. For instance, bring a notebook and pen. This way, you can write down how many miles the car has, what its vehicle identification number (VIN), and how much it costs. Bring some towels so you can check on how much engine oil it has, and a report on the history of the car.

Inspecting the Exterior

Next, inspect the exterior of the car. Give it a once-over and see if there’s anything you can notice that is wrong. Reputable used auto dealers will do their best to make sure their vehicles are in great condition for what they are, but they’re not perfect. Make sure there are no cracks in the windshield. Make sure all the lights work. Then confirm that the doors open and close easily. The tires should all be a name brand that you recognize. Be sure that the spare tire and its associated tools are included, and that the spare isn’t flat.

Inspecting the Engine

Every vehicle, used or new, needs a good engine. Make sure there are no leaks. Then ensure that the exhaust pipe isn’t blocked or leaking water. Does the engine emit bad smells when it’s on? That’s a bad sign.

Inspecting the Brakes

The brakes and steering system are also important for any safely operable used car. So you’ve got to make sure that the used car doesn’t start to list or drift when the brakes are applied. Likewise, make sure the brakes stop the car, and that the steering wheel responds as you expect it to, especially when you need to make wider or more sudden turns.

Inspecting the Interior

The seats and seat belts are just as important in a used car. They must all be intact and working. Figure out if the dashboard lights turn on, and if the air conditioning and heating work. Do the wipers and power windows work? Do you need a remote start system? These are important questions to answer while inspecting the interior of your prospective purchase.
