No matter what vehicle you drive, performance is important. Depending on how far you have to travel, you might only need to refill your gas tank once a month, or at most, twice a month. So if you’re curious why your gas mileage has been going down for no discernable reason, there could be something else that is wrong that you won’t realize.
The Fuel Injectors
Your engine needs fuel injectors to keep the gas flowing from your tank. It’s hard to tell if the injectors are filthy or have sprung a leak, especially if you’re not a professional mechanic. When the fuel injectors don’t work as they should, then your vehicle doesn’t perform as well as it should, and it guzzles more gas than is necessary.
Overuse of Air Conditioning
Fuel efficiency and gas mileage together like peanut butter and chocolate. Ordinarily, you wouldn’t think they’d have anything to do with each other. Just wait until you need to start using air conditioning more often. It’s rare that you will need it during the winter, but on unseasonably warm days, you’ll be glad you have working A/C. Using the A/C system does use up more gas, though, so you’ve got to take that into account on your next day trip. While rolling down your windows helps alleviate this problem, when you start going faster, you need to roll your windows back up. Otherwise, the laws of physics and drag would like to have a word with you.
How You Drive
How you drive also affects your gas mileage. Putting the pedal to the metal is fun, but it also wastes gas. Letting your engine idle, especially in the mistaken belief that you have to warm up your engine on a cold morning, can also drain your fuel tank and wreck your vehicle’s gas mileage.
Your Motor Oil
What motor oil do you depend on? The motor oil also impacts the performance of your engine. If you’re unhappy with the current output, then you could try a different brand of oil.
The Spark Plugs
You’ll also need to have spark plugs that are in good condition. If they aren’t working, then you’ll see it drag down your miles per gallon.
The Air Filters
Air filters don’t sound like the component that can make a difference when it comes to your gas mileage, but that’s another misconception. The filters help maintain the balance between air and fuel inside your engine, so that’s why you need clean air filters.
