What is the Difference Between a Lift Kit and Leveling Kit?

Lift Kit or Leveling KitThe easiest way to describe the difference between a lift kit and a leveling kit is how it raises your truck. When you first get a truck, the rear is typically a few inches higher than its front end. A leveling kit essentially levels the front of the vehicle to match the stock height of the back, with a maximum lift of about two inches in the front. A lift kit lifts the truck much higher into the air, but requires far more time and energy to add in what is basically a new suspension system. Both will allow you to drive, work, and tow your truck. So how to decide on which one you need?

One of the biggest advantages of leveling a truck is that it allows you to add larger tires to all four wheels. While most pickup trucks have plenty of clearance in the rear, the front wheels may hit the inside of the fender or bumper, making it harder for you to navigate and turn. A leveling kit will help resolve that issue. Also, if you add a heavy weight like a plow or winch to the front of the truck, it can cause the suspension to sag. A leveling kit can help you bring the front end back up to its proper height, giving you a smoother and more comfortable ride. They also have the advantage of being cheaper and easy to install than a lift kit.

However, lifting a diesel truck with a new suspension system has its advantages – especially with many trucks being built with low-to-the-ground features to make them more carlike. Rocks and debris can damage all low bumpers, exhaust, and running boards, meaning more maintenance and repair is necessary for your truck. A lift kit can help keep all these mechanical and body parts from getting messed up. When thinking about going off-road, lift kits are especially great, because having larger tires, better ground clearance, and more suspension can mean an easier drive through rocks, mud, or in deep snow.

So how to decide? If you use your truck mainly as a tow rig or utility vehicle, a leveling kit might be more your style. If you want a trick truck that’s sky high, or you love off-roading, a lift kit might be more your speed. Let us help you make that decision!
