Every year, 15,000 are injured and more than 200 are killed as the result of backup accidents. Many of these tragic accidents – 31% of which involve young children – could have been avoided with the simple aftermarket addition of a Backup Camera. Side view and rearview cameras only give drivers part of the overall picture. The term “blind spot” was created for a reason, after all. A backup camera helps supplement your mirrors, providing you with more visibility and greatly minimizing the risk of backup accidents. It is no wonder that U.S. safety regulators are requiring rearview monitoring technology to be standard on passenger vehicles sold or leased in the United States starting in 2018.
Why wait until 2018?

Backup Cameras Work. The Numbers Don’t Lie!
In a 2014 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) study, 57% of drivers in vehicles equipped with backup cameras avoided backing over a stationary, child-sized object that had been placed behind the vehicle when they weren’t looking. 75% of drivers in vehicles with backup cameras AND audible sensors avoided such accidents. Meanwhile, 100% of drivers in vehicles not equipped with backup cameras ran over the child-sized object.
“Rear visibility requirements will save lives, and will save many families from the heartache suffered after these tragic incidents occur,” said David Friedman, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) acting administrator.
By 2054, when most U.S. vehicles on the road are equipped with rearview systems, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates the technology will save 58-69 lives a year.
